Little bits of Summer

Golden Years
It's been so beautiful the past few days, sunny and not too hot. Perfect weather.

Got me thinking of summer...so here I am at the beach reading the latest Charlaine Harris in the southern vampire series. Not to worry, sunblock in use!

The Patrick Connection

Over the last few months I've been preparing for an exhibition. It's been a lot of hard work but the results were definitely worth it! The exhibition featured over 20 of my watercolours and some stunning art and jewellery by two of my cousins and my two brothers. As we all paint in different styles, subjects and media it was a truly diverse display - but the combination made for a great show!

The exhibition was on for 2 weeks at the Hastings Arts Forum gallery in St Leonards, East Sussex. Here are a couple of pictures showing the gallery, for more info and a slide show of images see my blog: http://www.whetnallwatercolours.blogspot.com/

Lights and Shadows

"Lights and Shadows"
after John Singer Sargent ~~ Corfu: Lights and Shadows ~~ 1909

I am always searching for ways to grow as an Artist. Sometimes, the best way is to step back and take a look at the Masters of Art. One of my favorites is John Singer Sargent.
During Art class last night, I studied one of his landscapes. I tried to see if I could capture the shadows of light on the house, as he had. I would never compare the two, but I am happy with the way my turned out :)
During Sargent's long career, he painted more than 2,000 watercolors, roving from the English countryside to Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida, and each destination offered pictorial stimulation and treasure. Even at his leisure, in escaping the pressures of the portrait studio, he painted with restless intensity, often painting from morning until night.

Have a nice day, Mr Shark

I've posted quite a few floral/traditional still lives so far, so here is something slightly different. It's a painting of 2 amazing origami models - I am lucky enough to have a steady stream of stunning origami to enjoy! I painted this as I would paint a botanical still life - I like the simplicity of the two models floating in space. What do you think? All comments very welcome!

Clothesline, Original Watercolor Painting

"Clothesline" is an original watercolor painting.
The transparent colors flow throughout ~~ blues, purples, pinks, and greens

I have always wanted to paint clothes on the line. There is a gracefulness about how they hang, and swing with the gentle breeze...

Skies are always fun to paint, you never know how they will end up. I love laying down the paint and letting the colors mingle and work their majic. Sometimes they turn out the way I want and sometimes a total disaster and a redo is the only option, but most the time they turn out to be a beautiful blend of colors!

Country Landscape II ~ Watercolor Art by Tracee Murphy

This is similar to the one I listed yesterday. The composition is different, but the beautiful colors remain the same and are reminiscent of the country in Texas when the wildflowers have bloomed. They remind me of the Texas Hill Country in the spring and summer.

Yes, I paint subjects other than sand dunes lol! This is a sweet country landscape. Spring is here, the wildflowers and trees are blooming. Down here in Texas I've noticed the bluebonnets are beginning to spring up too!

I also have a similiar painting that will pair very nicely with this one. They are both the same size and colors, but a different landscape. The second painting will be listed in my shop tomorrow. These come with a mat and are ready to pop into any standard size 8 x 10 inch frame!

Watercolor Art by Tracee Murphy

This weekend I had the pleasure of spending most the weekend with my fellow watercolor artists from the Watercolor Society of South Texas. We got together and shared a booth at the Festival of the Arts in Corpus Christi. We sold our work for $20 each and it was a great way to make some extra cash. It was a very successful event for all who participated and we all had a good time!

This week I will be listing what I have left in my Etsy Store. Please visit my store for more info on the painting you see here. One item will be added daily.

Red Tulips

I'm trying to absorb some abstraction and expression into my painting. To add more life and colour than a naturalistic impression might allow. I love pattern, colour and painterly-ness, and hopefully I've managed to capture some of that in my latest painting. Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Moonlight

This challenging painting was created using only 2 pigments, yellow ochre and french ultramarine blue. As far as I know, these are the only 2 yellow-and-blue-don't-make green hues. Instead we get a beautiful shade of grey.

Here is Moonlight, 11" x 15" available now in my Etsy shop.

Artist Profile - Tracee Murphy

Every so often we will be featuring one of the talented Watercolor Works team members with a mini interview to find out more about them alongside some pictures of their work.

Name: Tracee Murphy
How would you define your artistic style? Loose and painterly
When did you start painting? First started 10 years ago, but i have been painting more as an artist for the past 2 and half years.
What is your favourite media and why? Watercolor, of course. It's what i'm drawn to and probably has a lot to do with the fact my mom is a w/c artist too.

Cactus Flower - Original Watercolor (22 x 30 inches)

How long does it usually take you to complete an artwork? Several small paintings can be done in a day, a 1/2 or full sheet anywhere from 1-3 days unless i'm not happy with it and i put it away for a while. depends on how much detail the painting involves.
What do you like best about being an artist? Artist freedom and license to paint anything any color or any way i want!
What advice would you give other budding artists? I'm still budding, but for newbies i'd say practice, practice, practice, but most of all just enjoy what your doing and if you like your work then others will too.

Original Watercolor (8 x 10 inches)

What or who is your inspiration? The many wonderful local artists i get to be around in classes, workshops, and art organizations.
Which artist, past or present would you most like to meet? Terry Madden is my favorite artist and I've already had the privilege to meet him. i just hope i get to meet up with him again.
Which is your favourite gallery and why? The Art Center of Corpus Christi is where i'm currently putting in my work and trying to get involved with.
How do you define Art? Art is in everything whether you design buildings, a landscaper, tattoo artist, etc.

Victorian Architecture

I love drawing and painting architecture and I'm always taking photos of potential paintings. I'm lucky enough to live close to this beautiful Victorian arcade in Westbourne, Bournemouth. With it's stunning glass roof it makes an attractive, if challenging subject!

The Range - New Watercolor Painting

Here is a painting I finished this afternoon. It's titled The Range, 15" x 20". It was exhilarating to paint with my broad brush, wet on wet, and it just worked. Great feeling.

Sunrise, Sunset - Original Watercolor

This new painting was a bit nerve-wracking as I tried to get the warm sunset and it's reflection down in basically one pass. I think it worked pretty well. My reference for this painting was a photo posted on Wet Canvas for this month's watercolor challenge.

Here is Sunrise, Sunset, 11" x 15", listed now in my Etsy shop.
